Overdue Court Fees

 Public Inspection of Court Payments Owed

 

​Pursuant to G.L. 1956 § 8-15-9.3, the Director of Finance for the Rhode Island Judiciary is required to publish a quarterly list of the one hundred (100) delinquent persons who owe the largest amount of court imposed or court related fees, fines, court costs, assessments, charges, and/or any other monetary obligations due and owing to the state (1) which have been unpaid for a period in excess of ninety (90) days from the date that any such amounts were due, and (2) are not the subject of a court-ordered payment plan in good standing.


Your name will remain posted on the Judiciary’s website until your court ordered financial obligation is paid in full or you are on a payment plan in good standing.​

Please be advised that in addition to your name being posted on the Judiciary’s website, consequences for failing to resolve your court-ordered financial obligations may result in the following actions being taking:

  • ​Tax refund interception;
  • Blocking of license and car registration renewal;
  • Reporting of outstanding balances to credit bureau;
  • Referring the matter to a collections agency; and/or
  • For cases in the Superior and District Courts, if you do not appear in court or if your payment is not received by the court on or before the due date, the court may issue a bench warrant for your arrest and you will owe an additional $125.00 warrant fee to the State of Rhode Island and you may be adjudged in contempt and sentenced to imprisonment.

2. Online payments for court cases 

You can pay your court fees at Make Payments

For Superior and District Court cases, if a warrant has already been issued against you, you must appear in court. You cannot make any payment on your case until you appear in court.


3. Ability to Pay Hearing and Court-ordered Payment Plans: 

If you cannot pay the full amount owed, you are encouraged to take the necessary steps to request placement on a payment plan by appearing at the appropriate clerks’ office. If you do not have the present ability to pay, you may request an ability to pay hearing before a judicial officer of the respective court.

You will be asked to bring the following information to your ability to pay hearing:
