Veterans Mentor Program

Mission Statement: To ensure that every veteran that becomes involved in the judicial system receives the attention and guidance he or she may require through mentors that have related experience and a genuine concern for veterans.

     Veteran Mentor Program Goals:

  • To be a mentor, advocate, and ally for those veterans involved in the judicial system.
  • To assess the needs of fellow veterans with their adjustment back into civilian life.
  • To assist fellow veterans in receiving the appropriate level of services they need to reach their full potential as productive members of society.
  • To assist fellow veterans in navigating the Rhode Island Judiciary, outpatient and inpatient treatment systems when applicable, and the veteran’s affairs system.

Welcome Colonel (RET) William P. Babcock

Chief Judge Jeanne E. LaFazia and the Rhode Island Judiciary welcome Colonel (RET) William P. Babcock as the Veteran Mentor Coordinator for the ASTR-RI Program at the District Court. Colonel Babcock will serve as a guide, role model, advocate, and support for the veteran peer mentors as they navigate the judicial system. He will listen to concerns, assist in determining needs, attend scheduled court sessions, assist veterans on accessing and navigating the Veterans Affairs System, and finally train, be supportive, and helpful to other Veteran Mentors.

William “Bill” P. Babcock is a native of Wakefield, Rhode Island. He enrolled in the R.O.T.C. program while a student at the University of Rhode Island. After his 1968 graduation, he was commissioned as an infantry officer. Among other assignments he served in the Republic of South Viet Nam. While serving he earned the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Air Medal. After completing his initial active duty tour, he joined the Rhode Island National Guard. In 2003, he volunteered for active duty in Afghanistan, where he spent six (6) months as Chief of Staff, Office of Military Cooperation-Afghanistan. In 2005, he volunteered for duty in Iraq, where he spent three (3) months. As well as earning numerous decorations for meritorious service, Colonel Babcock has earned a Master’s Degree in Education as well as Business Administration and is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, the Defense Strategy Course, and the Army War College.
