Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Is there a cost to filing a petition?

Yes, all petitions require a twenty-dollar ($20.00) filling fee.  Appeals to the Appellate Division of the court require a twenty-five dollar fee($25.00) filing fee.

                  The payments of all fees should be made payable to:

Administrator, Workers’ Compensation Court

2.  Where are you located?  How do I get there?

The clerk’s office is located on the third floor and the courtrooms are located on the fourth floor of the Garrahy Judicial Court House, One Dorrance Plaza, Providence, RI

 Exit 22A (Down City – Memorial Boulevard)

Follow Memorial Boulevard until it turns into Dyer Street.  Take a right onto Clifford Street.  The Garrahy Judicial Complex will be straight ahead and to the right.

3.      What are your hours of operation?

The Court’s hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

4.      Do I need a lawyer to proceed before the Court?

 While one is not necessary it is recommended, a referral can be obtained through the RI Bar Association 401-421-5740.

 

5.      Once my petition is filed how long before my court date?

You will receive a pretrial notice for a hearing approximately 21 days from the date of filing.

            6.  Can I speak with the Judge about my case?

No, all correspondence should be made through your lawyer.

7.    What if I can’t make my Court date?

Contact your lawyer’s office.   If you do not have a lawyer contact the clerk’s office 401-458-5000.

            8.  What if I have questions about my rights under the RI Workers’ Compensation laws?  

Contact the Department of Labor and Training-Division of Workers’ Compensation at 401-462-8100.

9.    What if I need copies of documents in my Workers’ Compensation file?

Your file is a public record.  It can be viewed during our hours of operation. Copies can be obtained for a fee of fifteen cents ($.15) per page.
